Bonjour Gwada: Guadeloupe’s top 12 Airbnbs

Caribbean vacations don’t have to be spent at all-inclusive resorts! Despite the many benefits of this kind of lodging, huge complexes are uncommon in Guadeloupe, with the exception of the renowned Club Med La Caravelle. As a result, there are many possibilities and Airbnbs are incredibly popular in Guadeloupe.

Will it be a luxury villa, a beachfront cabin, a modern condo with views of the sea, or a rainforest ecolodge? You decide!

Where in Guadeloupe can I stay?

Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre, the two main islands that form the shape of a butterfly, make up the French term “l’île papillon.” Both are very distinct from one another; the latter is hillier and more tropical, while the former is flatter and beachier.

I can’t say much about the former, because I simply haven’t spent a lot of time there. Both times I went to Guadeloupe I ended up picking the latter, Basse-Terre, because its wilder, more luxuriant aspect was more appealing to me personally.

If you’re looking for adventure, trekking (like La Soufrière, a volcano in Guadeloupe National Park), and a more tropical vibe, I highly suggest making reservations for lodging in Basse-Terre. With its lush hilltops, hidden hot springs, and tiny beachy coves, the island is equal parts seaside and jungle. The sea is fairly close to places like Sainte-Rose and Trois-Rivières. Getting to stores and activities, however, might be challenging; anticipate a 25-minute journey each time you leave your lodging. Small cities like Bouillante or Deshaies are good options for those of you who would rather walk or drive shorter distances.

But why not have a look at some of the smaller, lesser-known islands if you have a little more time or if this isn’t your first trip to Guadeloupe? Les Saintes, Marie-Galante, and neighboring islands have a ton of lodging options.

It’s good to know that the majority of Guadeloupe’s Airbnbs are only available for visits longer than three or four nights. It’s best to schedule your activities in advance!
